Chapter 14
It was Sunday morning, and Detective Matthews was getting himself ready for church. He had barely gone to church whilst living in York, and he hadn’t really given it too much thought since returning to Whitby. That was until his sister had asked him to join the family whilst she was over cleaning the previous day. She had certainly done a marvellous job; the entire house now looked and smelt better than Matthews could ever remember it doing when his grandmother had lived there. She had even gone over the bits he had done, clearly deciding he had not done it nearly as well as she would have liked.
There was a church just around the corner from his house, but his family had always preferred to go to St Mary’s Church on the east cliff, at the top of the one hundred and ninety-nine steps. It was his mother that had insisted on this, she found the setting on top of the cliff, overlooking the harbour below, and looking out onto the sea a much more pleasant location. His mother had been quite a free spirit during her life; preferring to spend time on the beach collecting shells, or in the woodlands picking wildflowers. She was always seen as an odd match to Matthews father, he couldn’t have been any different if he had tried, yet their love for one and other was undeniable.
Matthews walked to the church alone. He was half asleep after spending the entire evening with his friend Jack at the Black Horse Inn. He had only gone to question a handful of people about his investigation but ended up returning home a little worse for where after midnight. He hadn’t seen his friend Jack in so long, yet they spoke all night as though they had never been apart. After telling Jack about his police career in York and his return to Whitby, Matthews had been keen to hear all about Jack’s adventures as a navy officer. They spoke for hours, and time seemed to pass them both by unknowingly, which surprised them both when the landlord called for last orders.
When he reached the top of the one hundred and ninety nine steps his sister Charlotte was already there waiting for him. Matthews stopped on the final step to catch his breath; he had forgotten quite how steep they were. During his moments pause he glanced back down to the town below him, he had to agree with his mother, it was a stunning location for a church. The scene from the top was always changing with every season, and the buildings below appeared so diminutive and bunched together in the little town. The rows and rows of chimneys that lined the tightly packed streets were only broken up by the River Esk, which was lined with hundreds of fishing boats all the way down to the harbour entrance that led out to the open sea. The two large stone build piers that framed the end of the river harbour looked even more impressive from this angle.
